Stitched in Time: Humboldt County's Quilted History
The Cigar Wrapper Quilt: Created in the 1890's, this is one of the oldest quilts in the Museum's collection. Many of the quilts on display represent a wide variety of materials. This one is homemade of primarily yellow and gold silk cigar labels with black writing and occasional bright colors like reds, purples, and greens. The backing is greyish-celery silk, and a bow of gold ribbon is stitched through the backing, holding the layers together.

The Main Hall will showcase "Humboldt County’s Quilted Past," with historical pieces like Ulysses S. Grant Quilt, the Blue Lake Quilt, and many other masterpieces that embody the county's rich quilting heritage from the 19th-Century to the present day.
Crazy Quilt: Crazy Quilts are one-of-a-kind statement pieces with a focus on personalization and embellishment. The quilt pictured here is made from silks, velvets, and wool flannel with embroidery, painting, top stitching, hand stitching and machine finished stitching.

Yvonne Jolley
Yvonne Jolley began sewing at the age of nine on the knee of her grandmother, Mary Jennings. An avid sewer, she rises in the early morning while her family sleeps to sew at least one or two hours a day. Yvonne began sewing using traditional quilt patterns. In the last decade, she has experimented with modern and art quilts, and is now designing quilts and garments featuring traditional Yurok symbols.
Yvonne has two other quilts and a jacket with matching purse on display at the Clarke Museum now!
